#129. pasta-making, feeling at peace & early retirement

Age: 43

Occupation: Senior Leader for a Fortune 500 Company

Income: $300K+

Astrological Sign: Leo

What is your first thought every morning?

What time is my first meeting?  Am I prepared for it?  Do I have time to wash my hair?  I am not a morning person.

What is something you do solely for you?

Reading.  The feeling of holding a book in my hands calms me more than anything else.

What is something you dread?

Social engagements, specifically with people that I may not have seen in a while where the fear of judgment will be HIGH.

What is something you are looking forward to?

Any time away from the demands of work with my husband.

When do you feel most accomplished?

At the end of the day when I have a minute to reflect on the life my husband and I have built together.

What is something you regret investing in financially?

Nothing that I regret investing in, other than I wish I in general had started investing earlier.  I’m ready for retirement already!

What is something you regret investing in emotionally?

The level of investment in my work.  I love what I do but it has taken years for me to come to terms with the separation of me as an employee vs. me as a person.  I am not my work, and the opposite is also true.

What are three things you think are absolutely worth the investment?

(financially, emotionally, or time/energy-wise)

  1. A home or space where you feel at peace.  Regardless of where it is, if you own, rent, whatever, find somewhere that you can feel calm.

  2. The right health decisions that allow you to operate at your best.  I spent years fighting a battle with depression that I can never get back because I wouldn’t give myself the freedom to talk about it.  Therapy and medication has changed my life.

  3. An expensive purse that you use every day for life.  I don’t splurge on much, but I will buy the purse I want and drag it through the mud with me.  I don’t spend money to shove it in a closet and not be admired.

When do you feel most creative?

Honestly, never.  I rarely consider myself a creative person.

How often do you compare yourself to others? When?

Everyday all day.  Especially when it comes to my appearance and weight.

What is one thing you’d like to thank your past self for?

Making a few brave choices in my teenage years to leave home for college a few hours away and commit to it.  It has changed my life for the better.

What is one thing you believe about your future self?

She will be happy, loving and loved in return.

What is one thing you learned in childhood that you have now had to unlearn in adulthood?

Perfectionism.  I still struggle.  I cried for days the first time I wasn’t given the highest performance rating in Corporate America.

Have you ever felt pure joy? When?

A local restaurant has become a convergence point for our small but tight-knit friend group.  We decide we’re all going to be there in 30 minutes, and I look around the table at how lucky I am.

What is something that would feel really good to get off your chest?

Please don’t assume that you know why my husband and I don’t have children.  You truly have no idea.  Also, stop asking.  Your questions aren’t changing a thing, and my personal worth is not tied to my ability or choice of reproduction.

When do you feel most in your feminine energy?

Driving my husband’s massive V8 SUV.  I am so short I must leap into it, but I can open the sunroof and put my foot on the gas and feel invincible for a minute.

What is one interaction that changed your life?

Meeting my husband.  I wouldn’t have taken the path I’m on without his support.

What is something you want to give up?

Feeling guilt.  I was once told that it’s a useless emotion and that has stuck with me for years.

What is something you want to take up?

Pasta making.

What do you believe is a universal truth?

Karma is a bitch.

BONUS: Tell me something good.
